An animal adult, whether human or non-human, is one who has grown to its full potential. When used with humans, the term "adult" may mean something associated with legal or social concepts. An adult who is legally mature, in contrast to "minors" or "non-adults can be defined as someone older than the average age and consequently considered responsible, independent as well as autonomous. They may also be regarded as an "major". The age when a child turns an adult legally is 18 years old, however the definition of maturity is different based on the legal or country system as well as the state of their mental health.

Adulthood refers to the period that a person has reached full maturity in terms of both mental and physical development. Many people believe that the age of adulthood starts at 20 years or more. After middle age (starting about 40 years old) is the time to reach old age (around age 60). Adulthood can be divided into three stages that are: the early years of adulthood (18-mid-30s) between mid-30s and the mid-60s then late adulthood from mid-60s up to death. At the beginning stages of adulthood (between 20-40) then our bodies have reached full maturation although our height and weight may rise slightly. As we enter our early twenties, our physical abilities reach their peak. These include muscle strength as well as reaction speed.
